چکیده

ent developmental time points after receptor agonism may explain whether this is an alteration in receptor signaling or changes in receptor expression with age. What does appear to be known is that p75 expression and signaling is not only temporally but also spatially dependent on some unknown intracellular mechanism. Studies to characterize p75 expression and its coupling with known partners (e.g., Trk) at varying ages are currently underway in our laboratory. The expectation is that these studies will provide more detail about the mechanisms by which isoflurane injures developing neurons.

The effect of neuromuscular blockade on mask ventilation.

We wished to test the hypothesis that neuromuscular blockade facilitates mask ventilation. In order reliably and reproducibly to assess the efficiency of mask ventilation, we developed a novel grading scale (Warters scale), based on attempts to generate a standardised tidal volume. Following induction of general anaesthesia, a blinded anaesthesia provider assessed mask ventilation in 90 patient...

Ventilation by mask before and after the administration of neuromuscular blockade: a pragmatic non-inferiority trial

BACKGROUND Test ventilating prior to administration of neuromuscular blockade (NMB) in order to avoid a cannot intubate-cannot ventilate situation is a classic anesthesia teaching. The primary aim of our study was to show that facemask ventilation (FMV) after NMB was not inferior to FMV prior to NMB with respect to exhaled gas volumes before and after their administration. METHODS This study ...

Prediction and outcomes of impossible mask ventilation: a review of 50,000 anesthetics.

BACKGROUND There are no existing data regarding risk factors for impossible mask ventilation and limited data regarding its incidence. The authors sought to determine the incidence, predictors, and outcomes associated with impossible mask ventilation. METHODS The authors performed an observational study over a 4-yr period. For each adult patient undergoing a general anesthetic, preoperative p...

Difficult mask ventilation and muscle paralysis.

To the Editor: We read with great interest the study by Ikeda et al.1 and the accompanying editorial.2 It is now increasingly recognized that muscle relaxants are beneficial in overcoming difficult mask ventilation in adults.2–4 However, both current papers are lacking a sufficient discussion of the reasons why muscle relaxation improves difficult mask ventilation. This can primarily be deduced...

The effect of patient positions, Sound production and neck rewind on Mallampati grading and classification to predict difficult mask ventilation in patients

Aims and background: The difficulty of ventilation with masks is one of the most common causes of severe respiratory consequences in the field of anesthesia. Objective: To evaluate the effect of patient position, voice production and neck rejection on the Mallamapati grade, in order to predict the difficulty of ventilation with mask in patients. Materials and Methods: This research was of a pr...
